Teaser Tuesday – Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week, my teaser comes from Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. I’ve seen this book (and its author) all over the place, so I decided I should finally read the book!

From Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs

It was my grandfather’s island. Looming and bleak, folded in mist, guarded by a million screeching birds, it looked like some ancient fortress constructed by giants. As I gazed up at its sheer cliffs, tops disappearing in a reef of ghostly clouds, the idea that this was a magical place didn’t seem so ridiculous.

In this story, the main character’s grandfather tells him all kinds of magical tales about the island where he grew up, and then he has a chance to actually visit the island, as you can see from the teaser.

    • Oh, I know, isn’t that cover cool? Apparently that image (along with all the other vintage photos in this book) was a *found image*. At first I thought they were all staged and taken for the book, but that’s not the case. So cool!

    • Yes, I’m really enjoying all the pictures, too. Even though I’m reading the Kindle edition — on my phone! — which makes it kinda hard to see all of them. I think it’s fascinating that all of the images are found, and he weaved a story using them as illustration!

    • Haha! You’re not the only person who finds that cover creepy. I think, though, overall this book isn’t really very creepy. It’s more… mysterious and… peculiar. :)

So, what do YOU think?
