Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
This week, my teaser comes from The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake. I have to tell you, I am thoroughly enjoying this book! Look, I realize that I basically posted a whole paragraph as a teaser down there, but it’s worth the read. I love that part, so much.

I shook my head. The vent whirred, and the air conditioner kicked up a notch. I could feel the tears beginning to collect in my throat again, but I pushed them apart, away from each other. Tears are only a threat in groups.

When I crossed the street, according to my mother, I still had to hold someone’s hand. At ten, I would be able to cross streets unhanded. I’d held onto Joseph’s many times before, for many years, but holding his was like holding a plant, and the disappointment of fingers that didn’t grasp back was so acute that at some point I’d opted to take his forearm instead. For the first few street crossings, that’s what I did, but on the corner at Oakwood, on an impulse, I grabbed George’s hand. Right away: fingers, holding back. The sun. More clustery vines of bougainvillea draping over windows in bulges of dark pink. His warm palm. An orange tabby lounging on the sidewalk. People in torn black t-shirts sitting and smoking on steps. The city, opening up.We hit the sidewalk, and dropped hands. How I wished, right then, that the whole world was a street.
I like that paragraph, it’s very warm and happy. kelley—the road goes ever ever on
I like it too (in case you couldn’t tell). There’s another part much later in the book where this scene is referenced again and it’s just so lovely. :)
awesome teasers! It’s very true about tears. I love the title of the book!
Here’s my Teaser Tuesday at Bookmunchies (:
Yes, the quote about the tears really caught me, due to its truth. :) Aimee Bender has such a way with words.
